Dearest Martha, it has been a week and three days since war broke out over Shane Gillis' stupid joke. I fear I shall never return to your warm bosom that I pray is modestly dressed during your daily calisthenics lest you be seen by the judgmental gaze of a slovenly man on the television box. You knoweth the type: Gym teacher-looking fellow who lives in a one-bedroom apartment because his wife left him for a man who doesn't constantly grunt when he's on the toilet, that kind of guy...

Did you like that intro? Welcome to another exciting edition of "Who's Roasting or Defending Shane Gillis Now?" In today's installment, Dana Carvey has slotted himself in the latter category as the SNL star joined the chorus of male defenders asking "What's the big deal? He didn't really mean it!"

"I just didn't understand the kerfuffle only because, to me, I just saw it as what we call -- I'll just say it -- a joke," Carvey said on the latest episode of his Fly on the Wall podcast via Variety. "Like, when you say jokes, you're not literally saying women are wh***s. You are literally joking. Isn't that kind of the idea? No? Did I just get canceled?"

Your first thought is probably, "Wait, has Dana Carvey always been this bad?" Kinda-ish. I remember watching him on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and he yucked it up with Jerry Seinfeld about how Jon Lovitz is killing it with a Vegas set that isn't "politically correct." That raised my eyebrow all the way back in 2018, but to Carvey's credit, he's never really shown his ass like so many of the old guard. Until now anyway.

After David Spade's assistant Heather says off-camera that Gillis' joke only caused an issue because it wasn't funny, Carvey fired back that it probably killed in comedy clubs before retreating to saying Studio 8H where SNL is filmed wasn't the right venue for it. Spade then mocked Carvey for giving in so quickly before going on a rant about how you're not supposed to make fun of sex workers anymore, but why is Sydney Sweeney fair game? I'm the resident harvester of Sydney Sweeney clicks, and even I rolled my eyes on that one. If you want to kill some brain cells, you can watch here.

I haven't weighed in on the Shane Gillis controversy because I used to run a celebrity gossip site that was powered by Kim Kardashian's back porch. But there was always an underlying theme to the whole production, which thankfully, many readers understood: The male gaze is the dumbest thing in the world. Why should we by in any position, whatsoever, to judge the appearance of women? Have you looked at us? We're not exactly built for aesthetics. It's a freaking miracle the human species has lasted this long. At some point women are going to realize they don't need our weird assortment of shapes and protrusions flopping all over them and adjust accordingly. Frankly, we should be kept in a garage and only brought out to move furniture. It's for the best.

Anyway, here's Anthony Jeselnik on how comedy is done, and I also recommend this clip where he shreds "cancel culture." Enjoy.
