Cooper Hoffman Doesn’t Know Where Those X-Men Rumors Came From

The MCU turns twenty in a little less than two years, which is insane. Still, the comic book franchise is not only not putting on the brakes, but they’ve enlisted Ryan Gosling and a new Black Panther, David Jonsson, to help lead the way for the next decade and a half (which Kevin Feige claims they have a plan for). The X-Men will also likely factor into those plans, with rumors that Adam Driver will play the team’s greatest villain. But Cooper Hoffman claims he don’t want no part of that s***.

Hoffman, the son of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, has crafted his own remarkable career, which is starting to take off even more. I’ve only seen him in a few things, but one of them was The Long Walk, which he starred in with David Jonsson, and he’s phenomenal in it. That performance really speaks volumes about his talent, because he’s able to give us a fully fleshed-out character while mostly just walking for two hours. It’s very good, and quite haunting, but just because Jonsson has been plucked from that film doesn’t mean Cooper will be.

The actor has been rumored to play team leader Cyclops, which I would have selfishly been okay with because Cyclops is my favorite X-Men character (he had glasses, I had glasses) and can carry a lot of weight when done correctly. James Marsden is a pretty tough act to follow. Just ask Tye Sheridan, who played the character in several movies, movies which are being more or less wiped away.

Oh, not gonna be me, but I love the X-Men. Not for any reason, it’s just not - I don’t know where this came from. S*** spreads,” he told Entertainment Tonight (via Dark Horizons). When asked if he was interested and if the fans had more of a say in who gets cast, he didn’t completely shut the door. “Of course. They don’t, but I wish they did. I wish they had more of a say. I love X-Men, I’ve been watching since I was a kid. It would be such an honor.”

Would be, could be, should be, Cooper. I’m fascinated by what Kevin Feige’s X-Men film could be, and a lot is riding on it, which would likely explain why he has taken his time since acquiring the rights. Feige was there for the first X-Men film, and lore has it that he was instrumental in keeping it in line with the comics. He probably wants to put his best foot forward, and casting a bunch of really talented actors would do just that. But it sounds like Cooper Hoffman won’t be one of them.
