A Nation Mourns as 'Doctor Who' Has Been Taken Away from America
For Christmas this year, my kid got myself and Uncle Seth — the co-owner of this site — really cool Doctor Who Playmobile sets. Because he knows I love Doctor Who but don’t have the patience to put together a massive Playmobile TARDIS, he did it for me, because he’s a good egg. In exchange, we introduced him to Doctor Who, careful to ensure he was being properly supervised during the creepy episodes, so that he was not plagued by nightmares. He made it until the last two episodes of the first season, but I insisted he wait and watch those with me, because I thought it important I be around when he experienced his first Doctor regeneration.
It’s how a boy becomes a man.
Alas, that day will have to wait, because Netflix pulled Doctor Who today. It’s not coming back, either. It’s also not on Hulu anymore, and the BBC also has not struck a deal with Amazon to stream it there. For the time being, Doctor Who is not available on any streaming service in the United States. We are without Doctor Who in our lives.
This is a dark day. Even when we weren’t watching Doctor Who, it was always nice to know it was around, whenever we needed it. Netflix gives, and Netflix taketh away, and you know they are coming for Sherlock next.
There’s a reason for it, of course. The BBC has plans to release their own stand-alone streaming service, and when they do, exclusive rights to Doctor Who will probably boost subscriptions in the short term. I know I’ll subscribe immediately. Given my wife’s fondness for old-lady British shows, it will probably be the most popular stand-alone app in our household.
A date for the release of the BBC service, however, has not been announced. In the meantime, my son will have to stumble around oblivious to the what, where and why of Doctor Who, like poor Joe Starr, who does not understand true joy.
