It’s been a little while since I indulged in my deepfake obsession. The machine learning and AI-based technology that replaces one person’s face with another is getting better and better, and making the once hypothetical scenario of video sources becoming yet another fountain of misinformation rather than a tool of verification a reality. Deepfakes have a significant potential for sinister purpose, already being used in ways linked to abuse, fake news, fraud, explicit misogynist revenge material, and smearing activists to name just a few.
