The Grammy Awards are always a strange mix of boundary-pushing a full-throttle ‘How do you do, fellow kids?’ For every delightful surprise, there are three or four reminders that the music industry is painfully behind the times and stubbornly wants to stay that way. This year feels like a good approximation of that formula, albeit one that leans more modern and far younger than it has in quite a while.

The musical stars of the 2019 zeitgeist are present and accounted for, from Lizzo and Lil Nas X to Lewis Capaldi, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande. Record of the year is split evenly along gender lines, while five out of eight nominees for Album of the Year are women. There are a few notable absences. Lover by Taylor Swift, released just before the Grammy eligibility cutoff in late August, is absent in both those categories. Western Stars, Bruce’s first album of original material since 2012, is a big snub. K-pop sensations BTS received zero nominations too.

We won’t share every nominee because this is the Grammys and there are hundreds of awards to give out, but here are some of the biggest categories.
