Adding fuel to the it-might-really-be-over fire, news broke earlier today that the Hannibal cast contracts have been allowed to expire, leaving Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy free to explore other opportunities. As Deadline notes, if another outlet were to pick up the series for a fourth season, everyone’s contracts would have to be renegotiated. Both Dancy and Mikkelsen are said to be keen on the show, and would like to continue their roles. Meanwhile, Bryan Fuller also has a commitment to Starz’ upcoming American Gods, which sounds like his first priority now that NBC has canceled Hannibal. Fuller said he’s open to anything, and would love to continue Hannibal’s story with a film, or even to “redefine” the streaming format with “mini-movie trilogies.”
