This past December saw the premiere of Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, the first volume of director Zack Snyder’s long-awaited sci-fi film made for Netflix. It didn’t receive the most glowing reviews from critics (especially not from TK), but that didn’t stop people from tuning in to watch it for themselves. For those who need a recap of what Rebel Moon is about, it is centered on a mysterious woman named Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) who has found a home on a peaceful farming colony called Veldt. When her past comes back to haunt her in the worst way imaginable, in the form of soldiers from the evil Motherworld empire, led by Admiral Atticus Noble (played by Ed Skrein), arriving to inflict their greed and wrath on the people of Veldt, Kora decides to recruit warriors from other worlds to help her protect her home by fighting back against Noble and his armies.

During the press tour for Rebel Moon - Part One, it was revealed that Snyder was working on director’s cuts for both parts, which would be released by Netflix at a later date. Not only will they be R-rated, and contain a lot more of the violence and sexual content that isn’t seen in the PG-13-rated, family-friendly versions of the films, but they will each have one hour of additional footage. This means that there will be a six-hour-long version of Rebel Moon on Netflix for the whole world to see before the end of the year.

From Variety:

“I’m super proud of the PG-13 version, the broader audience version, because I would say it really satisfies an awesome, timeless, mythological scope,” Snyder said. “What we’ve done with the other version is fun and subversive because an R-rated sci-fi movie at this scale shouldn’t exist.”

The director’s cuts will be a lot more violent, in addition to fleshing out Snyder’s new universe. He added that these director’s cuts would be an hour longer, with “big chunks of the movie that are different.”

“It’s not just slightly different or a little bit more,” Snyder said.

It’s a decision that has left even Snyder’s most passionate fans infuriated with Netflix, particularly its former head of film, Scott Stuber, for insisting on Snyder having to make shorter and more family-friendly versions of Rebel Moon in the first place. They didn’t like or understand why the streaming service that became popular for allowing subscribers to binge-watch multiple episodes of any television series, and gave Martin Scorsese free rein to release all three-and-a-half hours of The Irishman, suddenly demanding that Snyder introduce Rebel Moon to the world with a weaker and watered-down version of the story he wanted to tell. Many fans of Snyder and his work, who are aware of the upcoming director’s cuts and why they’re being released, have said that they have little to no interest in watching Rebel Moon - Part Two when it drops, and will instead wait until the extended cuts are both released so they can be watched in their entirety the way they were meant to be seen. Snyder is largely known for releasing extended cuts of his films (Watchmen, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder’s Justice League) that often receive more positive responses from critics and audiences than the theatrical versions, so fans of his work are hoping and expecting the same thing to happen with Rebel Moon when the original version of the film finally sees the light of day.

This afternoon, on the third anniversary of Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiering on HBO Max, the trailer for Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver was released.

Whether you like the movies of Zack Snyder, hate them, or don’t care anything at all about them, expect the man and his work to be a popular and polarizing topic of conversation on the Internet today, even more so than usual.

Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, starring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, and Anthony Hopkins, premieres on Netflix April 19. The release dates for the extended cuts of Parts One and Two haven’t been announced yet, but are expected to be released this summer.
