The wait is almost over for fans of director Zack Snyder, who have all been eagerly looking forward to his next project after the successful one-two punch of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead: the two-part sci-fi film Rebel Moon.
For those of you who haven’t been pouncing onto every morsel of information about the film since its announcement, Rebel Moon originally got its start as a Star Wars film that Snyder had discussed making with Lucasfilm. But after Disney bought the studio, that conversation went no further, and Snyder decided that what was originally envisioned as a story to be told a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away, could now be a story told in its own universe. One without lightsabers, Jedi Knights, and bounty hunters who will raise all nine circles of Hell to protect their adorable baby Yodas.
The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
This past June, Vanity Fair published an in-depth article by contributor Anthony Breznican about the making of Rebel Moon, which included interviews with Snyder and several cast members, including lead actress Sofia Boutella. Later that month, a brief teaser showing behind-the-scenes footage from the film’s set was released by Netflix, which ended with scenes of spaceships in flight before landing on the surface of an unknown planet.
This afternoon at Gamescom, a full trailer for the film was finally released.
It was revealed last year by Production Weekly that Rebel Moon was actually being filmed to be released as a two-part film. But thanks to confirmation from Snyder himself on Twitter, we now know that Rebel Moon will be a two-part film with slightly updated titles. The first film will be titled Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, and the second film will be titled Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver.
No matter how you feel about Zack Snyder and his work, it’s practically guaranteed that this trailer will give his fanbase (one of the loudest and most intense fandoms in existence, and whose worst and cruelest members always manage to make the most noise) a lot to talk about on and off the Internet until its release date.
Rebel Moon - Part One, starring Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Ed Skrein, Jena Malone, and Anthony Hopkins premieres on Netflix December 22, and Rebel Moon - Part Two will premiere on Netflix April 19, 2024.
