The trailer for James McAvoy’s Speak No Evil may look good, but it’s more accurate to say that the plot for the movie is seriously messed up. The film stars not just James McAvoy, but also reunites Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy from Halt & Catch Fire, except here, they play a married couple. They are invited into the home of McAvoy’s character, who has a son who does not speak because he has no tongue.

The film is based on a 2022 Danish horror movie called Gæsterne (The Guests), which Indiewire described as “the most cunningly depraved horror film in years.” I won’t reveal the twist for those who don’t want to be spoiled, but 1) the plot is available on Wikipedia, and 2) I’m really excited to take someone to watch it and see their reaction when they realize what the twist is.

McAvoy seems perfectly cast for his role. Bless him for taking on such a twisted, unsettling premise.

Speak No Evil hits theaters on September 13th, and I’m angry I have to wait that long.
