Back in the day when Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t a soap opera, Cristina Yang was its best character, hands down. The friendship between her and the titular Meredith Grey was the only thing worth watching. When Cristina left, so did I, but fans are still holding out hope that she might make a return, even a brief one.
“I love that people are still [fans],” Oh said of Grey’s, just renewed for season 21, on the red carpet at the premiere of her new show The Sympathizer. When asked if she thought Yang would make a cameo, she said, “I love that you asked me that, because Cristina Yang is, of course, near and dear to my heart. [But] I will say, not anytime soon, my love.” Damn. At least she was nice about it.
But I appreciate it, because this show has been going on too long, and Yang had a near-perfect story arc. We don’t need a million seasons of anything plus reunions plus revivals plus whatever. Oh agrees.
“I hope people feel like I did my job, which is that I brought to life a character and she had a growth over 10 seasons, and that it was true.” 10 seasons! That’s already a lot! Dare I say it should have been enough! What characters are even left now that Meredith and Cristina are gone and, like, everyone else worth watching was killed off? Aren’t they running out of real estate?
“She was ready to move on, and so have I.” That sounds like the most mature response to a breakup I’ve ever heard. Taking notes over here.
The Sympathizer premieres April 14th on HBO.
