There’s no need to list off our grievances with mankind at the moment, if only because we’d be here all day. But it’s always nice to be reminded of our humanity, of the reservoir of goodness that still exists in this godforsaken world, whether it’s Keanu or Brendan Fraser or Joshua Jackson (RIP) or Robin Williams (for real) or just hearing Denzel say “from around the way,” which is a thing I could listen to literally all day long.
Another of the world’s greatest mensches is one Mandy Patinkin, whose warmth and authenticity (in addition to the remarkable chemistry he has with his wife, Kathryn Grody) has given younger generations of people online a newfound appreciation for the actor. What’s also remarkable about Patinkin and his timeless movie The Princess Bride is that it’s one of those movies that parents love, and love to show their children. I’m sure there are a lot of parents and children who can say of The Princess Bride: “That is our movie.”
To wit: It was the favorite movie of Alaska Web’s father, which made it a favorite movie of hers. It’s something they shared together. Unfortunately, earlier this year, Alaska lost her father to cancer. Patinkin, likewise, lost his father to cancer at a young age. In fact, Alaska had heard tale that when Patinkin — as Inigo Montoya — delivered the line, “I want my father back, you son of a bitch!” in The Princess Bride, he was thinking of his own father.
Was he? Patinkin and his wife were able to provide an answer to Alaska. Let’s just say there was a whole lot of emotion here. If there are people around you who you don’t want to ugly cry in front of, maybe come back to this later this evening.
