How Big a Flop Was Netflix’s Electric State?

Netflix unleashed the Russo Bros.’ Electric State upon the world last week. The film, starring Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, was met not only with abysmal reviews but also with tepid interest, despite a reported $300 million budget.

A movie that cost $300 million — likely one of the most expensive in Netflix history — should probably be seen by a whole lot of subscribers to justify the spend, right? Electric State failed to deliver. In fact, since Netflix shifted its metric from hours viewed to total views in 2023, 18 films have outperformed Electric State in their debut week. And among the top 19 films released since that change, Electric State holds the lowest Tomatometer score.

Here’s the list—the most-watched movies in their first week since June 2023—if for no other reason than to prove it really doesn’t take $300 million to score a streaming hit. Although, judging by the quality of most of these films, it doesn’t take a great movie to score well, either.
