Barbarian was full of surprises. The 2022 horror film kept those secrets close to the vest, releasing trailers that gave very little information about the film. Through positive word of mouth, it ended up being a smash hit, earning positive reviews and ten times its budget at the box office. Despite its success, it is still not available to purchase on Blu-ray, but that’s a complaint for another day.

The film’s director, Zach Cregger, is a comedian turned-horror director, following Nope and Get Out director Jordan Peele. Cregger co-founded the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know and has starred in several sitcoms. Like his hit film, the writer/director’s move to horror caught a lot of people by surprise and made his next project a hot commodity.

Weapons, described by the Hollywood Reporter as “an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia,” has generated a lot of buzz. Since being announced, it has courted the likes of Pedro Pascal and Bryan Tyree Henry for starring roles. It was then reported that Josh Brolin would replace Pedro Pascal as the star.

Several months after Brolin’s casting, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Cregger had found his co-star. Brolin will be joined by Julia Garner, who was recently cast as Silver Surfer in the MCU’s new Fantastic Four film. The Emmy-winning star is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most in-demand stars. Her addition adds an extra level of excitement to the already anticipated film.

Expected to begin shooting in May, little other details are known about Weapons outside of comparisons to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 film. Cregger could once again keep details of the movie secret until we lay our eyes on it in theaters. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up at Warner Brothers, or the film will be stuck on streaming, doomed to be throttled by your internet provider.
