Muhammad Ali lost the best years of his career when he spoke out against the Vietnam War and refused to be drafted. He was convicted of a felony for his stance, becoming a public face of resistance by speaking at colleges and staying active in his opposition. His conviction was eventually overturned, but it wasn’t guaranteed and not without a fight. Ali put himself, his family, and his future at risk because he believed in doing what was right and just. He inspired many with his actions and is part of a long tradition of celebrities speaking out against political wrongdoing.
Many famous people, past and present, have used their platforms to voice their political concerns—not just about well-known issues, but also to spotlight atrocities that might otherwise go unnoticed. Speaking up about real-world concerns isn’t a duty, but it is a right. Still, “with great power comes great responsibility” isn’t just a Spider-Man quote; it’s a principle to live by. So, in other words, you shut up, Pharrell.
Pharrell Williams is a Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated recording artist and producer, known for being a part of the rap/rock group N.E.R.D. (Maybe slaps). His hit song, Happy, has likely been stuck in your head at some point, whether you like it or not. Soon, a documentary film about his life made out of Lego will be released. He’s a big star, and he’s annoyed that others choose to use their voice to make a difference!
“There are celebrities that I respect who have an opinion, but not all of them,” Williams recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m one of those people [who says], ‘What the heck? Shut up. Nobody asked you.’” Ah, yes. Did you catch that, Taylor Swift?! Got it, LeBron James?! Are you listening, Jane Fonda?! Pharrell doesn’t want you to try! Shut up and sing/dribble/perform, why don’t ya?!
“I would rather stay out of the way,” Pharrell explained. He claims to be more of a “humanitarian” than an “activist.” He continued, saying, “I’m going to vote how I’m going to vote. I care about my people and I care about the country, but I feel there’s a lot of work that needs to be done, and I’m really about the action.” Of course! He’s about action, not… activism! He wants you to do something but not… something. I don’t know.
“I’m not an activist, but I believe in action,” Williams said, doubling down on his nonsense. Somebody better go back and tell 2016 Pharrell, who supported Hillary Clinton in her campaign for President. He even appeared at one of her rallies. But not now! It’s not like Hillary’s same opponent is running again. He certainly hasn’t changed, aside from getting demonstrably worse. What’s changed with you, Pharrell?
