Welcome to another exciting episode of “Let Taylor Swift Cook” that I’m sure won’t be instantly contentious. I got a good feeling about this one.
The past few weeks saw a flurry of activity around Swift as her BFF Brittany Mahomes was exposed as a Trump supporter and then doubled down on that perception. For a brief moment, it seemed like Mahomes and Swift were heading for some drama when they didn’t sit together at the first Kansas City Chiefs game. However, that narrative lasted barely 48 hours before they were spotted together at the U.S. Open, still thick as thieves. Because the internet is dumb and full of terrors, Swift started getting pelted with accusations that she’s secretly MAGA and/or a closeted Republican, which didn’t make a lick of sense considering her politics are not a secret. It made even less sense when Swift dropped a well-timed endorsement of Kamala Harris that sent over 400,000 people to Vote.gov in 24 hours.
As Dustin covered on the Substack, Swift’s endorsement had Trump frothing at the mouth on Sunday when he posted on Truth Social, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,” so you really couldn’t ask for a better reaction. She clearly got under Trump’s skin, put points on the board, and his little temper tantrum may have been enough to cost him Brittany Mahomes’ vote.
Via Daily Mail, requisite caveat about grains of salt, etc. etc.:
‘She is questioning her support for Donald Trump after he lashed out at Taylor, saying he hates her,’ a source exclusively revealed to DailyMail.com.‘This deeply bothered Brittany because Taylor is like a sister to her and she has done absolutely nothing wrong.
‘She didn’t mention Trump in her post and is allowed to speak her mind.’
The source added that Trump’s decision to react in such a hateful manner upset Brittany.
‘She does not believe in hate in any form and loves Taylor so much,’ the insider continued. ‘This shook her to the core.’
They added: ‘This doesn’t mean she is suddenly voting Kamala. It has just made her more aware of supporting him so publicly.’
Right upfront, there’s plenty to side-eye there — assuming any of this is even legit — and I’m sure a lot of you will have similar reactions to what I’ve seen on Twitter. Things like being mean to Taylor Swift is what gave Brittany Mahomes pause, not all the racism? To which I say, touché.
So, let’s assume that the best-case scenario here is Mahomes is no longer voting for Trump but won’t pull the lever for Kamala. Is that a win? You bet your ass. Peeling off Trump voters is probably the most realistic outcome anyone with MAGA people in their life can hope for, and it freaking matters. If people go from Trump voter to non-voter, take that win.
Speaking of folks having MAGA people in their life, I’d like to clear the air because it got a little heated last week. I’m not big on “Both Sides,” but in this case, there genuinely were very thoughtful and salient arguments across the board. MAGA is a much uglier beast than the party divisions of yesteryear, and we’re at terrifying levels of bigoted nationalism on top of women’s rights being on the line. It’s a bad situation all around, but playing purity politics by policing other people’s friendships and families isn’t going to solve anything.
It’s easy to say, “Spend Christmas alone or you’re just as bad as MAGA!” when it’s not you spending that Christmas alone. Some of us didn’t have the good fortune of being raised in liberal families or knowing our neighbor’s politics before moving in. We’re all just trying to do the best we can in a sea of goddammit.
