When celebrities get dragged on social media, they typically take one of two routes: They double down and dig themselves into a bigger hole, or they delete their social media accounts, which gives us in the media another story to write.

Paula Patton, on the other hand, is totally chill about getting fileted by Twitter over her bizarre fried chicken tutorial. She was on vacation in Mexico with her kid when she was told that social media was dragging her up and down their timelines. But she was cool about it, acknowledging that maybe it looks crazy, but it really is the way she and her mother make it.

“I just wanted to respond and say listen, I get it, it might look crazy. It is the way we do it. It’s all good, because everybody’s got their own way of making things and I’ll take suggestions. I’ll make a new kind of fried chicken, but I’m going to always make my mom’s chicken the way that she did it. We put the seasonings in the oil and all that — it’s just the way we do it.”

Here’s the video:

Two things: She was getting it from both sides about washing the chicken, with some saying it was unnecessary and others saying she wasn’t washing it enough. She addressed the latter, saying that the edit made it appear that she didn’t wash it as thoroughly as it appeared, which is funny to me because why are you washing your chicken? The CDC literally says do not wash chicken. The other thing she says is that she fed that chicken — that pink-on-the-inside chicken — to her son’s friends. So, I’m just glad that the call she got the morning after was that she was blowing up on Twitter and not from a parent whose kid was admitted to the hospital for E. Coli.

I have to admit, however, that I’m very tempted to try to season a batch of fried chicken in the oil. I just want to see what happens.
