Matt Czuchry Had the Most Logan Response to the ‘Gilmore Girls’ Boyfriends Debate

Some questions have divided the human race since time immemorial. Questions like, “Why are we here?” and “What’s the meaning of life?” and of course “Which of Rory Gilmore’s boyfriends was the best?”

To refresh your memory, Rory Gilmore of Gilmore Girls had three significant boyfriends. First, there was Dean, the tall, dark, and handsome loner with a jealous streak. A guy like Dean is everything you’d expect from a first boyfriend in that he’s sweet-natured and obsessive, sometimes veering on possessive, of his beloved. He has floppy hair and a nice smile, and losing your virginity to him would be tender and kiss-y and not at all dramatic (unless you’re Rory Gilmore, an agent of chaos, but I digress).

When you break up with a Dean, you have to do something wildly different. Enter: Jess. Jess is a short, messy-haired blow-in from New York with a chip on his shoulder and a penchant for American literature. Is it just me or is it getting hot in here? Jess isn’t gonna build you a car or whisper sweet nothings into your ear, but he knows you, you know? Like, he knows you enough to know when you’re ruining your life by dropping out of Yale and moving into your grandmother’s pool house, and he will tell you so, and you may not be ready for it, but someday you will thank him.

And when you’re dropping out of Yale and living in your grandmother’s pool house and squandering your dreams, Logan will be there to tell you it’ll all be okay, it’s no big deal, his dad will just give you a job at his newspaper. Logan will buy you a Birkin bag and laugh at you lovingly when you don’t know what a Birkin bag is. He’ll charm your grandparents with his history of family wealth, devil-may-care brand of charm, and your mother will hate him for how he reminds her of your father. His friends are reckless and offensive, and, honestly, so is he, but he can scrub up well for the adults and knows exactly what to say to get out of a sticky situation. He’ll propose to you with his mother’s mother’s ring because it’s the proper thing to do.

But you don’t love him.

These three boyfriends, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, are near-perfect stand-ins for the early loves of a young woman’s life, and the men who portrayed them on Gilmore Girls have remained strikingly true to their characters in the ensuing years. Take Dean, played by Jared Padalecki, who went on to play Sam Winchester in Supernatural, who is basically Dean but more yell-y (he also, you know, did get arrested that one time for starting a bar fight, which is totally something Dean would have done after he got dumped by his fiancée for cheating on her with Rory). Milo Ventimiglia, who played Jess, has made a career playing the rough around the edges with a heart of gold guy on shows like This Is Us, and has the kind of cool guy Instagram presence that Jess definitely would have had if he’d had an Instagram, but realistically he probably would have thought Instagram was lame.

Meanwhile, Matt Czuchry/Logan has been out here just rinsing and repeating the tight-laced bad boy thing on shows like The Good Wife and The Resident, and he had the most Logan-coded answer to which of Rory’s boyfriends was the best on a recent appearance on The Talk to promote his new role in American Horror Story: Delicate.

There was a TikTok video that went viral last year for its theory that neither Jess nor Logan were very good boyfriends, and that’s why women who grew up watching Gilmore Girls have such low standards, to which I respond, “…Touché.”

“We shouldn’t be searching for perfection in anything, whether it be relationships or whatever it may be,” Czuchry responded. “That show has spanned generations because of the timeless nature of it, and Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, who created the show, are amazing artists.” What a nothing statement—exactly the kind of statement Logan would make. Say a lot of nice words and flash ‘em a smile, and they’ll leave you alone and think you’re fancy and charming. It’s like he’s selling dental insurance.

He added:

“I think that Logan had his strengths and weaknesses, and Jess had his strengths and weaknesses, and Dean had his strengths and weaknesses, like we all do. And I think that the fun of the show is that you’ve got these characters who are flawed and had these great pieces and everybody debates who’s best for Rory because they feel different about their strengths and weaknesses that might match up.”

“He’s running for president!” Host Akbar Gbajabiamila said. I mean, with the way things are going lately, even I’d vote for him.
