Jacob Elordi Has Not Earned the Right to Be This Obnoxious

Jeremy Allen White is one of my favorite actors, and this has been true for over a decade because of his work first on Shameless and, more recently, on The Bear (it’s also in spite of, frankly, some mediocre film work: See, e.g., After Everything and Fingernails). Still, I was slightly annoyed with JAW for being so flippant about his audition for a superhero movie.

“Tell me about why should I do your movie,” he said to the producers of a superhero movie who were interested in him. “They were like, ‘Fuck you.’ And I was like, ‘Right on.’”

I don’t want to see Jeremy Allen White in a superhero film. I like that he turned them down. But he didn’t have to act like he was better than the genre. There are some spectacular actors who have done superhero movies. In fact, most of this generation’s best actors have made superhero films, except for Leo and Denzel, and Jeremy Allen White is not Leo or Denzel.

I’m similarly annoyed with Jacob Elordi, currently starring as Elvis in Priscilla, because he has even less reason to look down on superhero movies or even the The Kissing Booth franchise on Netflix, which are the movies responsible for launching his career.

“I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies,” he told GQ. “Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”

I mean, yeah: They are an escape. Mostly for 11-year-olds. They have their place in the world, and if Elordi is as high-minded as he thinks he is, he could’ve turned them down. It would have been apparent from the scripts that they are ridiculous. As my 11-year-old said when I showed her the quote, “He’s capping. Why does he think he’s better than The Kissing Booth? He should be promoting his movies instead of bad-mouthing them. He’s not that famous.”

Also, the third Kissing Booth film came out two years ago. He acts like he has had a lifetime of distance from them.

If that weren’t enough, he’s also shit-talking not just any superhero role, but the superhero role. “Well, they asked me to read for Superman,” Elordi told GQ. “That was immediately, ‘No, thank you.’ That’s too much. That’s too dark for me.”

Excuse me? Maybe superhero movies are not his thing. They’re not my thing, either. But Christian Bale, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, and Michael Keaton played Batman. Is Elordi better than them? Better than Henry Cavill? Brie Larson? Starring in two indie flicks — even well-reviewed ones like Priscilla and Saltburn — does not give him the right to be this pretentious.

This quote regarding his high standards, annoys me even more.

“How is caring about your output pretentious?” Elordi asked. “But not caring, and knowingly feeding people shit, knowing that you’re making money off of people’s time, which is literally the most valuable thing that they have. How is that the cool thing?”

We can decide what is and is not “shit,” thank you very much, and if want to watch shit, it’s our time to do with as we’d like.

This is a man who has spent way too much time with Sam Levinson.
