There’s a lot of bad takes on the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce romance this week, like the one where their relationship is used to discuss gender essentialism, the conspiracy that Swift is dating Kelce to tank the Kansas City Chiefs on behalf of the Philadelphia Eagles, or even some douchebag concerned that Travis Kelce will be milkshake ducked by the spotlight.

It’s a big story, and it’s frivolous, and we’re all trying to get a piece of the action (including Kelce’s ex, who low-key insulted Swift and called Kelce a cheater). No take, however, has been as bad as that of Bethenny Frankel.

Frankel — who had gained some goodwill by advocating for reality stars to join the labor movement — may have blown it all away by taking the Kelce/Swift romance way too seriously and presuming to know how football fans feel about the dating lives of NFL players. From Page Six:

“It felt like the Chia Pet of a relationship,” the former Real Housewife, 52, said. “Like, just add water. Like, they were together for ten years. Like, she’s a full football wife. … She literally looked like she had been in a serious relationship with this guy for decades.”

Frankel pointed out that the singer, 33, “gets really into the guy she’s with” before calling NFL fans “wary of newcomers.”

She explained, “It took a long time for Gisele [Bündchen] to be a football wife [to Tom Brady]. … Football fans are very tricky.

“They like loyalists,” the former reality star continued. “They like ride or die. They’re not interested in people coming in for a short ride.”

What are we doing here, Frankel? Is she upset that Swift has quickly ingratiated herself into the Kelce family? According to Kelce, it is true that Swift quickly curried favor with Kelce’s family. “I just thought it was awesome how everybody in the suite had nothing but great things to say about her — the friends and family. She looked amazing, and everybody was talking about her in great light,” Kelce said today on his brother’s podcast.

What’s it to Frankel? Who is she trying to protect here with these admonishments? Football fans? Is she afraid that we’ll all get attached to Taylor Swift, and when she and Kelce break up, we’ll be left bereft? I think we’ll be OK, Frankel! And football fans aren’t that tricky! The whole thing about football fans is that we’re loyal to a team to a fault, but if a player leaves that team, then the player is dead to us.

That is to say, Swift will be dead to us if she leaves Kelce for another homophobic British weenie, but we will be just fine … at least until Olivia Rodrigo starts dating Joe Burrow.
