Since breaking out in Winter’s Bone in 2010, every movie that Jennifer Lawrence has signed on as a lead since has made at least $100 million (House at the End of The Street was filmed around the same time that Winter’s Bone was released). Lawrence has had a remarkable run, and not just with franchise movies, but with substantive films like American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook.
Now, however, she’s about to get a taste for box-office failure.
Serena hasn’t opened in the U.S. yet, and based on its box-office in the UK, it probably shouldn’t, as the film — which co-stars Bradley Cooper — opened with a measly $153,310, good enough for 19th place at the box office.
That’s not good, considering that Silver Linings Playbook opened in the UK with $2 million and American Hustle opened with $5.6 million.
However, the dismal opening is in line with the reviews, which have been dreadful for the Susanne Bier film, which has been sitting around since it was filmed in early 2012.
Serena is set to open in the U.S. next February (although, I suspect it will only arrive on VOD and ITunes). The trailer, by the way, can be viewed here (and it looks terrible).
