The Best Films of 2010 -- Staff Picks

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Seriously Random Lists | Comments (20)

the-town-ben-af.jpg

Below, for the first time, we’re presenting the individual top ten lists of each staff member. Note, however, that only the first three lists — mine, Brian’s, and Dan’s — were used to compile the overall top ten list. Not because our opinions are better, but because we’ve likely seen and had more access to this year’s films (I suspect I’ve seen 150 or so in 2010, Prisco is probably pushing 200, and Dan is likely well over 100, as well). I haven’t done the math, but I’m guessing if we merged all the lists, we’d have the same 10 films, though perhaps in a different order.

Interestingly, I will note that we very nearly had a number one film different from 80 percent of the other sites and organizations, in Micmacs. It was tied for number one among our three lists (and, along with Black Swan, the only one on all three lists), and TK was sought to break the tie. You could blame Dan and I for making it our number one film of the year, or you could blame TK for choosing it over Micmacs. As always, blame preference should favor TK.

The individual lists should be somewhat interesting to many of you, at least to give you a better idea for each of the critic’s flavor. I know many of you will be most interested in Dan’s list (as was I, in fact) given how hard he’s been on films in 2010. That two films he wasn’t effusive about made his top ten list provides some perspective. My takeaway: Dan’s a hard fucking critic, and clearly the man holds awards contenders to higher standards.

I need to go watch some movies.

Did anyone else see Greenberg? I liked it, but I'm not entirely sure if that's just because Ben Stiller did a pretty good job of it. Unlike the oft-mentioned "Stranger than Fiction" I think his actressin was a perfect fit for the story.

1. Dogtooth
2. Exit Through the Gift Shop
3. Black Swan
4. Winter's Bone
5. The Social Network

If anyone else saw my number one pick, I will have to give them a high five for challenging their minds and choosing to watch such a twisted little film.

Kudo's to at least two of you recognizing Piranha 3D for the cinematic masterpiece it is.

I saw a lot of movies in theatre this year, some fun animations, some good adult films, but nothing rocked my cockles like Piranha 3D.

ah, it's a good life.

kamikaze, I haven't seen Dogtooth yet, but I've been curious about it. Seeing that it ranks so I on a list I feel pretty simpatico with, I'm off to Netflix!

Yeah TK, definitely has the closest taste to myself.

Posted by: DangadaDang at January 4, 2011 5:32 PM

There are some odd lists here, and I think I'll just have to chalk AgentBedhead's list up to personal taste

Posted by: ChristianH at January 4, 2011 6:03 PM

Fuuuuuuck there are so many movies I have to catch up on fuck

Posted by: kitkat at January 4, 2011 9:29 PM

It appears I'm a cross between Agent Bedhead and TK. I can't say I'm surprised. I can say I'm surprised that so many writers on one site saw Micmacs, as I haven't seen this much consensus on the film anywhere else.

I think these lists prove two things:
1. The only list that matters is your own.
2. People really loved The Social Network for whatever reason. I thought it was just pretty good. Certainly not best.

1. Inception - The most original film of the year, bouyed by the massive size of Christopher Nolan's balls and fantastic performances by every name on the poster.

2. The Fighter - Four fantastic performances (Wahlberg, Leo, Adams, and a guaranteed Oscar for Bale) and David O. Russel makes his best movie out of his most conventional premise. Go figure.

3. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Edgar Wright proves that he's our best director under 35 (sorry Jason Reitman), and Michael Cera is so good as Scott Pilgrim that he's guaranteed to not only be called George-Michael for the rest of his life.

I didn't see many of the "Oscar" films I wanted to, but these are other movies I saw this year and liked:

MacGruber (Val Kilmer destroys in this one)
The Other Guys (Wahlberg rocks it)
Easy A (Brilliantly written and Emma Stone's coming out party)
Going the Distance (for the chemistry between Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Justin Long alone)
The A-Team (Great action flick; alot of fun)
Kick-Ass (for Nic Cage and Chlor Moretz)
The Switch (because of Jason Bateman)
Iron Man 2 (Downey is a beast)
She's Out of My League (a truly funny film)
Hot Tub Time Machine (the four leads are perfect)

Just realized that Wright is 36. Congrats to Jason Reitman for regaining his throne. Edgar Wright is the best under 40 but over 35. Luckily for him, Paul Thomas Anderson recently turned 40.

Guys seriously? The Town? Why is it ranked so high and why is it on everyone's list? Did we see 2 different movies? Do you hate Inception that much?

That being said I love the shoutout to Shutter Island, which I believe was a truly underrated film. Ok here's my top ten (I haven't seen half the movies you people mentioned in your lists so screw me I guess).

1. Social Network
2. Inception
3.
4. True Grit
5. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
6. Toy Story 3
7. Shutter Island
8. Restrepo
9. The Town
10.

3 and 10 are blank because I'm anticipating putting The Fighter and The King's Speech there respectively when I see them.

I am confused, Dan gave an eviscerating review of the black swan that ended with the conclusion, "it’s just not worth it" and then ranked it the number 8 movie of the year. What gives?

Posted by: homeslice at January 5, 2011 3:10 AM

If he's anything like me, it's been a lukewarm year for films.

Posted by: Drew Morton at January 5, 2011 10:13 AM

Did no one see "The King's Speech"? Colin Firth put on an acting clinic in that movie.
