The 15 Most Badass Female Pixar Characters

By Josh Kurp | Seriously Random Lists | June 22, 2012 | Comments ()

We all agree that Pixar's Brave, which opens today, should be called Brave of Tarth, right? Every time I see a photo of Princess Merida, the film's frizzy, redheaded main character (voiced by the cute-as-a-bug Kelly MacDonald), I think of Lady Brienne from Game of Thrones. I'm not complaining. In fact, it's a compliment, because as Brienne is a badass, so too is Merida.

She's an archer, she doesn't want to do SO MUCH LAUNDRY, and she's Scottish. Scots are pretty metal, or whatever the old-timey version of metal is ("Wow, that's such a lute thing to say"?). In honor of Merida's awesomeness, here are Pixar's 15 most badass female characters.

15. Sally Carrera from Cars/Cars 2

Needed to include at least one character from Cars. Might as well get it out of the way now.

#14. Gypsy from A Bug's Life

#13. Princess Atta from A Bug's Life

#12. Hannah from Toy Story

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

Edna would be a good choice to add, yes. I'm just happy Boo is here. Look at that pose, what's more badass and adorable than that?

  • Gurp

YES. ROZ. OH MY GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU HAVE INSERTED A SMALL, WARM FLUFFY KERNEL OF JOY INTO MY HEART. I'm truly sorry for the caps but sometimes it's needed.

  • You managed to get a character from every Pixar movie, but forgot Edna Mode. Come on now. She gave pretty great advice and did so much more than Mirage.

  • Randomlurker

And it may be the fact that I'm a mom with a gorgeous dark-haired, dark-eyed little girl (whom I decided would be nicknamed Boo before I was even married), but Boo needs to be higher on this list. That little girl kicked ass.

  • Randomlurker

Ok, I get that she's dumb as a post (or at least as forgetful), but has there been a more adorably lovable character than Dory? Ever?

  • Cat

    THE GOLDENRAAAAAHHHD.

  • L.O.V.E.

This is a vote on behalf of my pre school daughter. "Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln [Vampire Hunter], Jessie for #1.

  • Garferty

What exactly does "badass" mean in this context? The only thing linking these female Pixar characters seems to be the, ah, female part.

  • Tatew

Edna Mode, please. Don't make me beg Dahhhhling.

  • Jezzer

It would have been nice to have seen a little blurb on each one about why they qualify as "badass" and in that order, but I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt by putting in a lot of effort on an article. Throwing a bunch of pictures on a page works too, I guess.

  • AngelenoEwok

    WHERE THE EFF IS EDNA?!

  • Becca Eberman

I assume that by not putting Edna Mode on this list you decided that she belongs in a class all by herself? Because if you simply forgot about her drastic measures will have to be taken my friend.

  • hass16

Elastigirl as #1 is what I meant. I'm going back in my hole.

  • Sara_Tonin00

    a) Elasti-Girl has to be number 1.
    b) all this list demonstrates is how sad Pixar's been about having awesome female characters (not a new point, I know)

  • hass16

You are stretching this post not choosing Elastigirl! Totally intended.

  • Jerce

You could just delete the first four words of the title of this post, and the list would still be on the money, wouldn't it?

  • WHERE THE HELL IS EDNA MODE? (and guest.)

  • celery

My family has Polish Crested hens (you may think of them as afro chickens) named Edna Mode and Guest. Edna is sadly past tense, but Guest is going strong.

  • jmd

Tarth? I think she is closer to Arya - Brave of Winterfell!

  • TheOriginalMRod

It's about time we had a heroine who embraces her frizzy hair. I am getting pretty tired of flat irons, blow outs and Hollywood hair.

  • Tinkerville

Amen. My curls are wild and free and they like it that way. Hollywood hair can stuff it.

  • BWeaves

Here! Here! I gave up my flat iron this year, and embraced my curls. My husband thinks I look unkempt, but everyone else says it makes me look younger. The only problem is, my hair never looks the same way twice, so I can't predict whether it's going to look cute or bozo-ee in the morning.

  • I keep scrolling up and down, looking for Edna Mode, but I somehow keep skipping right over her image. Huh.

  • Groundloop

I think Josh is indicating a preference for capes.

  • Fredo

Edna and Roz should co-share #1.
