Pictorial: The Complete Cast of Gavin Hood's Ender's Game

By Dustin Rowles | Seriously Random Lists | July 17, 2012 | Comments ()

As Comic Con has come to a close in 2012, I was beginning to think about what might dominate the convention next year, and it occurred to me that one of the most beloved sci-fi books in recent memory was being made into a film. Production on the film actually kind of sneaked up on me. It's one of those movies that has been discussed theoretically for so long that -- mostly as an unfilmable book -- that it never dawned on me that it actually began lensing. In fact, there's a release date set: November 1, 2013. Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) is set to direct, and Orson Scott Card is even on board with a cameo voice role.

No pictures or trailers have been released from the movie so far, but we do know who the entire cast is. This should give you a rough idea of what those beloved characters will look like on the big screen.

Ender Wiggin -- Asa Butterfield

Colonel Hyrum Graff -- Harrison Ford

Valentine Wiggin -- Abigail Breslin

Bean -- Aramis Knight

Petra Arkanian -- Hailee Steinfeld

Bonzo -- Moses Arias

Jimmy Pinchak -- Peter Wiggin

Alia -- Suraj Parthasarathy

Bernard -- Conor Carroll

Dink -- Khylin Rhambo

Fly Molo -- Brandon Soo Hoo

Mazer Rackham -- Ben Kingsley

Major Anderson -- Viola Davis

Theresa Wiggin -- Andrea Powell

This looks like a great cast! I hope it follows closely to the book...

  • marya

Please don't say things like "lensing." It's dumb, and you sound like Variety. Why wouldn't you just use the word "filming"? You're better than this. If you start using the word "shingle," I'm going to...I don't know. Write a strongly worded letter.

  • zeke_the_pig

'Hyrum Graff' sounds like the noise Harrison Ford makes when he wakes up in the morning.

  • chicky07

This is my favorite book ever so...I've been worried about the Ender's Game movie ever since I heard it was coming out. I *want* it to be good, but how will they pull it off? Hunger Games was (probably) easy to translate to film because the book practically read like a movie script on its own. Ender's Game was not that kind of book.

  • Becca

Good God, that Jimmy Pinchak kid looks exactly like the manipulative bastard I imagined Peter to be. I don't know if he's a good actor, but he certainly looks the part.

  • Claire Hill

I distinctly remember Dink being from like, Iceland or a Nordic country, thus the weird name... but I can accept it for diversity. Also, Ben Kingsley is pretty rad for Rackham... although I'm mildly sad OSC didn't get his way with Will Smith

  • yeags

I pictured Ben Kingsley as Mazer when I first read the book. I actually think Asa as Ender is the only casting I don't like.

  • E-Dogg

Ummm, which is the character name and which is the actor name? I've got no clue with 75% of these. Fly Molo - Brandon Soo Hoo. Is that a quiz? Do I pick the name that sounds less like Bowser's secret 9th koopaling love child?

This reminds me of a game we played at my cousin's baby shower. There was a list of statements like "ears or nose" and the players would indicate which of the two choices they'd prefer the unborn child to inherit from the mother. It functioned like a dry run for when the inevitable genetic checklist menus of perfect baby features we've been promised since GATTACA finally materialize... (ring ring, yes hello science? Get on that already, enough with the hoverboards.) ...but that's neither here nor there. My sister was confused and thought we were supposed to indicate whether, apparently in the event of some unforseen in-utero trauma, we'd prefer the baby to arrive sporting either ears OR a nose, given the necessity of choosing. Needless to say, this shrouded the game in a rather sobering cloud of Sophie's Choice 2: Baby Body Parts Boogaloo. All this to arrive at my original point of these character - actor names reading like a game of pick the lesser of two evils. Ender Wiggin - Asa Butterfield: either way, this kid stands no chance. Hope he has ears AND a nose.

    Bonzo and Peter are perfect.

  • Stephen Nein

Wait, Dutch-native Dink Meeker is black?

Oh whatever. As long as the kid can act and the director can get a good performance out of the kids. Hood has one win, and one fucking awful loss, so I'm not optimistic.

  • SLW

Dink wasn't Dutch, Bean was. There's an exchange in the novel between Dink and Ender along the lines of: "tongue in cheek joke about race"; "my grandfather would have killed you for that"; "my great-grandfather would have sold him first"

  • Bean was from Rotterdam, but he's Greek. His real name is Julian Delphiki.

  • Stephen Nein

I thought that was between Alai & Ender. or was that revised int hose fooking awful sequels?

  • Joe Grunenwald

Flip Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley and this is perfect.

  • kronos

The picture you posted for Jimmy Pinchak (playing Peter Wiggin) is actually of Dylan Minnette, who would have been a really good choice.

  • pajiba

    Woah! Impressive catch (and corrected).

  • Lauren Mckenzie

Isn't it ali? (i'm just a huge damn nerd for this series... i've read all of the books (including the shadow ones) at least every year since i was 14)

  • Annie Lockyer

    It's Alai.

  • Tinkerville

As worried as I am about this adaptation, this casting has me pretty damn excited. Everyone looks spot on and it's actually diverse.

  • sean

So everyone is at least 5 years too old for the part?

  • Socraz6

I don't think its too bad considering I thought they would go the 'age them up to muscle-bound teenagers' route to make it more palatable for the Hunger Games crowd.

  • Artemis

The book began with Ender at age 6 and ended with him being approximately 10. There was no way to film this thing with actors that young (and even if they could, I agree with Kelsy that the young ages were unrealistic to me while reading the book; I think that on screen they really would have been a distraction).

  • branded_redux

So cast young actors and actresses with at least some experience that will likely play a younger part well versus strict casting of eleven (or so) year olds?

    You remember Jake Lloyd, right?

  • Although even in my brain reading the book, I couldn't imgaine them at the right ages, so I'm kind of "meh" about the too old thing. I'm so excited Asa Butterfield is the lead.

  • Ruthie O

The headshot of the kid playing Peter Wiggin sent chills down my spine... So yeah, perfect casting.

  • Well, that's not actually him. That's a headshot of Dylan Minnette, most recently of Awake semi-fame.

  • Ruthie O

Ah, that's too bad! He really had the look down.

  • FireLizardQueen

He was the main bully in "Let Me In" and was creepy as hell in that movie too.

But that's not his name, either the picture's wrong or the name is. The kid in the picture is Dylan Minnette.

  • almond

Pretty spot on casting. Though I would have Moses Arias play Bean.

  • ed newman

    My first thought as well.

  • FireLizardQueen

Wow! A diverse cast for once.

Also, there's no way Asa Butterfield did not get his ass kicked daily with that name. Poor kid!
