It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of great cover versions. I’ve posted and written about a good number over the years. The proliferation of inventive, personal, and sometimes very funny covers is one of the more positive parts of the otherwise depressing YouTube/TikTok/whatever-other-platform-happens-to-briefly-challenge-the-status-quo era—so I genuinely enjoy discovering new ones, and sharing them with people. It’s rare that I return to the same well twice, however. In fact, I’m not sure if I’ve ever done it. I usually have one post about an artist, and then I move on, to be fair with the coverage. I have to make an exception here, though, because the sheer amount of quality that this guy puts out—and at such a breakneck pace—is noteworthy in and of itself. YouTube channel Moonic Productions, whom you might remember from my previous post about his ‘songs in the style of System of a Down’ covers, has only gone from strength to strength since then, putting out hilarious and ludicrously on point versions of famous songs as done by other artists. His latest, Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ (itself now surely one of the most covered songs ever) done in the style of Audioslave, is so perfect I felt compelled to come here and share it:
Mesmerizing, really.
Side note: That first Audioslave album holds up very well, arguably only getting better with age. Michael Mann gets it. We still miss you, Chris Cornell.
But back to Moonic Productions.
I’d really be remiss if at this point I didn’t link a few more outstanding examples of his work. So here, please, enjoy, a master at work:
