While Jane Campion’s win at the Directors Guild of America Awards this weekend for her psychological neo-Western The Power of the Dog was a solid achievement worth celebrating, clearly the far more notable moment of the awards show came when Campion took a moment to do what the stars of her film had thus far avoided doing: Confront Sam Elliott’s … how to put this? … Clumsily phrased yet unmistakably close-minded and bigoted comments about The Power of the Dog head-on:
Jane Campion responds to Sam Elliott's #ThePowerOfTheDog comments: "I'm sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. He's not a cowboy; he's an actor. The West is a mythic space and there's a lot of room on the range. I think it's a little bit sexist." https://t.co/I32wQ8lCiF pic.twitter.com/Tftq4AoXCy

Naturally, Twitter ate that up:

“I think it’s unfortunate & sad for him because he’s really hit the trifecta of misogyny & xenophobia & homophobia. I think he was being a little bit of a b-*-t-c-h. Plus he’s not a cowboy, he’s an actor.” pic.twitter.com/xR11EoSMaw
The pause and head-tilt after "He's an actor" could freeze rivers. https://t.co/YEQsDkGEHn

We come to this place for magic. We come to AMC theatres to love, to cry, to see Jane Campion call Sam Elliot a b-i-t-c-h. Because we need that, all of us.

I swear, the woman could have gone the way of diplomacy. Instead she went open-hand slap to the face (with every right to do so). https://t.co/4lGGOP8AJB

Between this from Campion and Kodi Smit-McPhee’s “Good luck to him,” we’ve been given two masterclasses last week on how to deliver a polite, classy “fuck you” without breaking a sweat.

A shame that Jane Campion won't be able to accept her Oscar in person, as she will be in prison for murder.
