In 2015, this would have been the biggest story of the day. However, in 2023, it has barely made a blip since it was first reported yesterday that former President Donald Trump essentially tried to get President Barack Obama assassinated. On Truth Social, Trump shared what he claimed was Obama’s home address. A 37-year-old man named Taylor Taranto — who was also involved in the January 6th insurrection — reposted the address to his Truth Social account and drove his van, filled with weapons and ammunition, into Obama’s neighborhood.

“We have these losers surrounded! See you in hell, Podesta’s and Obama’s,” Taranto wrote on Telegram. He then began live-streaming from his van on YouTube, discussing his attempts to find an entrance into the Obamas’ home through the sewers to secure a “good angle for a shot.”

Fortunately, President Obama’s neighborhood has a heavy Secret Service presence. Authorities had also been tracking Taranto because he had threatened to blow up the National Institute of Standards and Technology, had entered an elementary school near the Maryland home of Congressman Jamie Raskin while live-streaming threats to him, and had warned Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy that he couldn’t “stop what’s coming.”

Taranto — who had also promoted conspiracy theories suggesting that the death of Ashli Babbitt was a hoax — was apprehended a few blocks from Obama’s home. It’s unclear how many other would-be assassins saw the address or whether the post still exists on Truth Social. Attempts to locate it were hindered by scores of ALL CAPS posts, a flood of Catturd retweets, and a barrage of spammy ads for mosquito bite remedies.
