People Keep Getting Hit With Baseballs At Yankee Stadium

Baseball is pretty dangerous! Player injuries on the field can be devastating and range from turf toe to concussions and everything in between. On average, baseballs come off the bat at over 90 MPH. If you are a major league pitcher, there is a chance that that ball can come right back at you, and when it does, it is hard to dodge. This year at Yankee Stadium, getting hit with a baseball has also been an issue for people off the field.

Last night the Baltimore Orioles visited Yankee Stadium. During the game, second baseman Gunnar Henderson attempted to make a throw to first base and severely overthrew it. Just a total botch job. The ball went sailing over the first baseman and hit first YES Network cameraman Pete Stendel in the head. Stendel was in good spirits when he left the field and was conscious at the hospital. He will likely be OK, but it was a scary scene nonetheless. You can watch the clip below if you’d like. It’s not as bad as it may sound, but of course, watch at your own risk.

One of the wildest things about Stendel getting hit is that he’s the second non-playing employee to get hit at Yankee Stadium in less than a month! Announcer John Sterling was struck by a foul ball back in June while he was calling that same foul ball. Sterling takes the hit and then continues to call the rest of the game. It got me a little choked up the first time I watched it. The dude is a pro!

It’s pretty normal for baseball players to get hit by baseballs. It’s part of the game. It’s even somewhat normal for fans to get whacked now and then. Seeing two employees at the same ballpark get drilled in less than a month is wild. You can’t even link the two. They are completely different circumstances. The only thing they have in common is that both victims took the hit like a champ.
