Cameron Diaz "Sings" In Annie Clip That Physically Pains Us

As a little girl, I was obsessed with Carol Burnett. Despite being born years after her sketch show ended in 1978, I happily tuned in to reruns with a religious fervor. But for me, Burnett at her greatest was her sneering and silly turn as Miss Hannigan in 1982’s Annie. So when Cameron Diaz signed on the modern remake in the role of the neglectful and furious foster mother, I actually pitied her. I mean, who could possibly live up to Burnett’s performance?

Well, with this clip of Annie, we learn not Diaz. The comedic actress is frankly out her depth attempting to sing “Little Girls,” which has a mystifying new lyrics and delusions of giggling children as furniture. Because sure.

“I’m not singing—” Oh, we got that, Cameron.

As adorable as Quvenzhané Wallis is, and as much as I’ve enjoyed director Will Gluck’s past efforts (Fired Up!, Easy A, Friends with Benefits), this clip has pretty much dashed my hopes for Annie, opening December 19th. Maybe movies made specifically by Will Smith to make his kids more famous are destined to be terrible regardless of whether or not his kids deign to be in them.

Yeesh.

Let’s revisit Burnett’s drunken, past her prime party girl and her “Little Girls.”
