It’s not often that Jon Stewart can’t come up with an angle on an important news event, but given the short turnaround time (the Eric Garner decision came down only a few hours before the show taped), Jon Stewart was still in the processing-and-frustration stage, and it was in that mindset that he opened The Daily Show last night.
“I don’t know. I honestly don’t know what to say,” Stewart commented. “If comedy is tragedy plus time, I need more f*cking time, but I would really settle for less f*cking tragedy.”
“Damn,” he later added. “We are definitely not living in a post-racial society, and I can imagine there’s a lot of people out there wondering, ‘How much of a society do we live in at all?”
This is why Jon Stewart can’t leave us next year, because he is the voice of so many, even when those voices don’t know what the hell to say.
