One of the upcoming Anna Kendrick musicals (before she gives up musicals forever and ever) is The Last 5 Years, based on the super popular Off-Broadway play by Jason Robert Brown. The movie, like the play, tells the story of a couple almost exclusively through song, and unfolds separately through each character’s point of view. We see the rise and fall of their relationship from the beginning through Jamie (Jeremy Jordan), as Cathy takes us through starting at the end, working backwards, until the two finally meet in the middle of their timeline.
The movie premiered at TIFF yesterday, and was also picked up for North American distribution, so look forward to to drag or be dragged to a release date of Valentine’s Day 2015. The first clip has also been released, and despite the fact that Anna Kendrick is all hot and bothered, it’s pretty underwhelming. I found myself waiting for the clip to end after only about a minute. A fully sung-through musical is difficult material to translate to film without getting lost in the mundanity of singing about shoes and grocery lists.
I am, of course, totally willing to be wrong. I’d really love to love this movie. Thoughts, friends?
Let’s institute a new road safety rule: no open-mouth kissing the driver, okay?
