The Shorty Awards were last night, which celebrates the best of social media. Basically, it’s an awards show for Twitter accounts. Categories include Actor (Winner: Aaron Paul), Actress (Retta), Author (Neil Gaiman), Celebrity (Ian McKellan) which is somehow different from Actor, Kickstarter (Veronica Mars), Comedian (Patton Oswalt - duh), and Tumblr (Smart Girls at the Party), to name just a few. There’s even an award for best GIF (Matrix Cat, if you need to know).
When the Shorty people called the amazing, eloquent, often-naked Amanda Palmer to see if she was going to attend, she told them she would if they’d let her sing a song. And let’s take a moment to appreciate the level of celebrity you have to reach before you can make a demand like that.
Rather than sing one of her existing songs, she wrote a new one, using some of the year’s best-worst tweets, set to the tune of “Friday”.
Yes, it’s terrible (in a great sort of way).
