I’d never heard of Bass Reeves — the former enslaved Black man turned law enforcement officer — before Watchmen, and I am from Arkansas, same as Reeves (trust that he was not mentioned in our history textbooks). Damon Lindelof’s series, however, had a writers’ room with people of color in it, including Cord Jefferson, who was heavily involved in the series (so much so that he and Lindelof won an Emmy for writing).

Famously, Taylor Sheridan does not have a writers’ room. Taylor Sheridan, who took it upon himself to cover Native American boarding schools in 1923, also wrote Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Who better than a wealthy white man with a very high opinion of himself to tackle the law enforcement career of Reeves?

I do like David Oyelowo. I do not like David Oyelowo’s accent.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves premieres on November 5th on Paramount+.
