Where Did Benedict Cumberbatch Go? Oh, Here He Is!

Quick: Excluding the MCU, voice roles, and cameos (of which he has done many), can you name the last thing that you saw Benedict Cumberbatch in? For some of us, I’m guessing it was Netflix’s Power of the Dog. But that was a small art film angling for awards back in 2021. What about before that?

Honestly, I’d have to go back to either the most recent Sherlock episode in 2017 or the Alan Turing movie, Imitation Game, in 2014, a full decade ago. The MCU took him out of the game, and now he’s finally coming back for a Netflix series called Eric. Set in the ’80s, it’s about a puppeteer who takes matters into his own hands (like, literally), and uses his puppet skills to find his missing son.

Here’s the logline: “Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behavior alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.”

The six-episode series from Abi Morgan (The Hour) also stars Gaby Hoffmann and Dan Fogler. Here’s the trailer:

Eric arrives on Netflix on May 30th.
