The most recent episode of Yellowstone aired on January 1st, 2023. A lot has happened since. Because of scheduling difficulties, because Kevin Costner gave Taylor Sheridan notes, or because Taylor Sheridan thought Kevin Costner got too big for his britches, the series did not shoot the final episodes as planned earlier this year. A few months passed when we weren’t even sure if Kevin Costner would return for the final episodes.
We still, technically, do not know. Costner says he’s done with it, but he’ll have plenty of time to make up his mind for good because Yellowstone will not return until November 2024, which means that nearly two years will pass between the first half of the season and the back half. We don’t know if Paramount+ will still exist in November 2024. We don’t even know who will be President of the United States.
Speaking of which, not only will Yellowstone close out its run in November 2024, but another spin-off will premiere following the finale. It’s called 2024, and it’s the series that will star Matthew McConaughey. It will probably include several Yellowstone regulars, but it won’t be called Yellowstone, so Peacock will no longer have the streaming rights to it, which means that Paramount+ will finally be allowed to stream its most popular series. Note for cord-cutters that — if things stand as they are — the final episodes of Yellowstone will only air on the Paramount network, which, best I can tell, is a cable network that exists only to air first-run episodes of Yellowstone.
In addition to 2024, which is an insane title for a series that will presumably continue to air after 2024 and that has been given a name before we even know what a sh*tshow 2024 will be, there will be another Yellowstone spin-off to go along with 1883 and 1923. Paramount has also greenlit 1944, which will probably star older versions of the surviving characters of 1923. Or a 115-year-old character played by Harrison Ford.
Still no word on the other planned spin-off 6666, which has been in development for so long now that I have to think it’s probably dead.
