Andrew Lincoln left The Walking Dead midway through its 9th season, and immediately after the episode aired, AMC announced that there would be three Rick Grimes movies.

That was over five years ago.

Midway through the 10th season, Danai Gurira left, and all the speculation at the time was that she would join Andrew Lincoln in the Rick Grimes movies. That was nearly four years ago.

In the meantime, we have seen a spin-off originally expected to lead into the Rick Grimes movies (The Walking Dead: The World Beyond), and we’ve seen the original The Walking Dead as well as Fear the Walking Dead end, in addition to the premiere of two spin-offs and even an anthology series.

But now, finally, Rick and Michonne are back. It’s not a series of three movies, but the two will star together in The Ones Who Live, another television spin-off series that appears to be about Michonne’s search for Rick, who based on this photo appears to be in New York City, which is where the Maggie and Negan spin-off is set. Also note the three-rings flag: That’s the flag of the Civil Republic Military, which we saw in operation during The World Beyond.

Here’s the trailer.

I’m cautiously excited, as a long-suffering TWD viewer. My biggest reservation: Scott Gimple is running it. Gimple is the showrunner who ran The Walking Dead into the ground before Angela Kang revived it for a couple of seasons, anyway. Gimple, however, was also in charge during some of the best years of TWD.

The series premieres on February 25th.
