The trailer for Prime Video’s long-in-development television reboot of Mr. and Mrs. Smith has arrived. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was once attached but exited over apparent creative issues. Maya Erskine replaced her as Mrs. Smith opposite Donald Glover’s Mr. Smith in an adaptation of the 2005 film from Glover and Francesco Sloane (Atlanta).
It’s hard to know exactly what to make of the series based on the trailer, but it looks both fun and surprisingly straightforward for a series from the guy behind Atlanta. I expect the final product may (hopefully) be more subversive. Even if not, it will probably be better than the generic spy series the streamers continue to churn out (Reacher aside).
Watch the trailer:
Here’s the logline: “Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?”
Mr. and Mrs. Smith will premiere on February 2nd on Prime Video.
