Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show was (and still is) huge news. The comedian left hosting duties in 2015 after a near-twenty-year stint. His time on the show was lauded for its no-nonsense take on nonsense. Many turned to Stewart for their news, even if he begged them not to. Still, as he often pointed out, the alternatives were not better. While he made it clear that he was a comedian, more “serious” news correspondents came across more like puppets than journalists. Though, being a puppet has its advantages. Just ask Triumph The Insult Comic Dog (nailed it)!

A creation of comedian and writer Robert Smigel, Triumph is the dog you love to hate. In a similar style to acts like the incredible Jiminy Glick, Smigel uses the Dog puppet as a shield for ripping into celebrities and regular folk alike. Triumph disparages people with precision and a cigar. No matter where he is, he won’t mind taking shots at whoever has invited him. As was the case when he recently appeared on the Daily Show podcast.

Triumph stopped by the podcast studio and ribbed the person hosting him, writer Matt O’Brien. He took aim at O’Brien’s career, comedy chops, and even the room they were recording in. “This is the room where you euthanize all the correspondents who don’t find loving homes, right?” the dog asked of O’Brien. While no one is spared from the Insult Comic Dog’s wrath, he soon set his sights on returning Jon Stewart.

“Why the f-k is he coming back to Comedy Central? What happened? Did his OnlyFans account not take off?” Triumph wondered aloud into a microphone. He wasn’t all insults. He did appreciate that there were plenty of other dogs in the offices, as it reminded him of something pleasant. “You know what I love about The Daily Show offices? You have a lot of office dogs. And I think that’s wonderful,” Triumph exclaimed. “I love seeing all the office dogs around. It really made me feel at home when I took a s**t on Jon Stewart’s desk.”

The cantankerous puppet turned his attention back on O’Brien, asking, “What’s it like to work on the only Comedy Central show that isn’t a Futurama re-run?” O’Brien took it in stride, explaining that The Daily Show was located close to his home. Triumph pounced again, noting, “Right. So is White Castle. It pays about the same at this point.”

Smigel/Triumph fired a parting shot as he finished up the intro. “This is great, back here on The Daily Show. So what’s the topic of the show today? Republicans are bad or Trump is bad?” he joked. “No, seriously, you guys do do important work. I mean the state of politics is such a joke. So it’s just great that you guys have found a way to take all the humor out of it.” Oh, Triumph. We don’t deserve you and completely deserve you.
