There is nothing civil about racism. There is nothing civil about taking children away from their parents. There is nothing civil about denying healthcare to poor people. There is nothing civil about banning people from the United States because of their religious beliefs. There is nothing civil about grabbing a woman by the pussy.

The incivility of bigotry can and should be met with more incivility. You’ll notice — as Trevor Noah points out in this piece — that those calling for more civility all come from a place of privilege, and that includes Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. Civility does not upset their apple carts. Civility allows them the illusion of defending the rights of others without actually defending the rights of others.

You don’t effect change by being polite.

Anyway, watch this. It’s the best thing I’ve seen, so far, about the farce of civility, and do stick around until the end to hear how our white elected leaders in the 1960s lambasted Martin Luther King Jr. for his lack of civility. The words may change, but history is just a never-ending series of cover songs.

Now, the next time your Trump supporting family member calls for more civility, use your polite voice to tell them to go fuck themselves.
