Conan O’Brien ended the latest iteration of his long-running talk show tenure on June 24th, 2021. It was a proper send-off for one of the best to ever command a late-night stage. At the time, Conan mentioned a return to TV at some point. The plan was to do a show for MAX, possibly a variety show. After a while, it was revealed that the show would be different.
Toward the end of his late-night career, Conan launched a very successful podcast called Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend. As the show evolved, he began doing mini-episodes where he would speak to fans of his show. It allowed him to connect with people all over the world, and get a sweet hit of admiration that we all so desperately need sometimes. Conan liked it so much that he decided to meet some of them in person.
That is the premise of Conan O’Brien Must Go. Conan will travel to different countries, meeting his fans and people confused to see such a tall, redheaded man. It is not his first time traveling abroad for his show. He did several specials for CONAN where he traveled to places like Ghana and Armenia. It appears the main difference here will be that he’s traveling to meet specific people, but the energy feels the same.
The trailer for Conan O’Brien Must Go had me in stitches. Conan feels alive and excited. He’s at his self-deprecating best. He’s goofy, adventurous, argumentative (Jordan Schlansky will do that to him), and having a blast. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a trailer show so much while also showing so little.
All episodes will be streaming on MAX starting April 18th. It will be just under three years since Conan ended his last show. This feels like it may be his best one yet, to be enjoyed for years. Or until David Zaslav no longer wants to pay Conan O’Brien residuals. Whichever comes first.
