As promised last week, the official Cowboy Bebop live action series trailer dropped last night. It’s got noir, it’s got sci-fi, and it’s got a corgi. Here it is:

I think this looks, at the very least, like a fun time. But I also believe, like any adaptation or revival of a beloved property, whoever undertakes it has a fairly thankless job ahead of them. Make a shot-for-shot remake, and people will complain about its soullessness. Stray from the original a tad too much, prepare yourself for the worst that humanity has to offer. Personally, I’m holding judgment until it airs. It looks like the series will hit on a lot of the major plot points and characters found in the original: Vicious, Julia, even Pierrot Le Fou (if they make him half as unsettling as he is in the anime, I’ll be happy). Although the show will likely stick close to the source material, there’s a good chance some new plot beats will be introduced, especially since we know that legendary composer Yoko Kanno has brought her considerable talents to the adaptation. Aside from the look and feel, which, as expected, seems to already have fans divided, the big question seems to be “Where’s Ed?” There’s been no sight or news of the young hacker, who is arguably a fan favorite, leaving many fans disappointed. Looking at how close the series is sticking to the original, I bet twenty Woolongs that Ed pops up around the final episode of the season.

The live action Cowboy Bebop will air on Netflix on November 19th.
