HBO’s The Last of Us is great television, but it is limited by its genre. There are only so many stories one can tell in a zombie apocalypse, and while it might involve characters who are more beloved, by the midway point in the first season it was already trafficking in a lot of tropes familiar to anyone who has watched The Walking Dead. It’s not theft, by any means, it’s just that there are only so many types of stories that can be told in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies.
However, what’s being done in The Walking Dead: Dead City trailer sure feels like theft. Those familiar with The Last Of Us game know that there is a boss called the Rat King, named after a collection of rats whose tails are intertwined and bound together. The Rat King zombies, likewise, are a collection of the infected that is intertwined and bound together. They’re really gross, and they should be fun to watch in season two (or three) of The Last of Us.
Or, we could watch a similar zombie in The Walking Dead: Dead City. You can see The Walking Dead’s version of the Rat King in action in the trailer (a similar monster, by the way, also exists in Evil Dead: Rise.
Or, if you’d prefer not to watch the full trailer, here’s a quick glimpse. It also stands up in the trailer.
The Walking Dead: Dead City follows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland. It debuts on AMC on June 18th.
