The Nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards

The nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were announced this morning against the backdrop of the WGA Strike and the pending SAG strike. In fact, the ceremony itself, currently scheduled for September, is unlikely to air on Fox until late this year or even possibly January 2024 due to the strikes.

It won’t stop the nominations from happening, however, and this year’s nominees are solid, if not expected. There’s a lot of Succession, The Bear, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Better Call Saul, The Last of Us and Succession. There are so many Succession nominations that the guy in charge of craft services caught on camera in the background gets a guest actor nomination.

There are a few surprises, some welcome (Jury Duty, James Marsden, Sharon Horgan), and some not (Wednesday), and some that feel like they’re being given to previous seasons instead of the most recent one (Yellowjackets). That said, Melanie Lynskey lands another nomination for Yellowjackets, while Rhea Seehorn gets one last bite at an Emmy for Better Call Saul, a show that now has 47 nominations and zero wins (too bad it’s going up against the final season of Succession).

As much great television as there might have been, there wasn’t that much competition in the limited series category, where the lukewarm Daisy Jones and the Six racked up a lot of nominations alongside the lukewarm Welcome to Chippendales and the downright bad Dahmer. It does give Fleishman Is in Trouble and Beef a leg up in that category.

Oh, and there are some major Star Wars nominations, one deserving (Andor) and one not (Obi Wan).

As for snubs? The biggest undeserved snub is Reservation Dogs (although it landed an editing nomination so at least they know it exists now), and the most deserved snub is an almost complete shut-out for Taylor Sheridan (Tulsa King did land one for stunts).
