I still maintain that the cancellation of Evil may go down as one of the most boneheaded decisions in recent television history (the show was cancelled while it was crushing it on Netflix). But that’s how Paramount+ rolls: plenty of room for Taylor Sheridan, but not nearly enough for great television from Robert and Michelle King.
That said, CBS (which is owned by Paramount) did recently pick up another Robert and Michelle King series, because all they do is write hits (see also: The Good Wife, The Good Fight, and their producing work on Elsbeth). That show is Cupertino, and it reteams the Kings with their Evil star Mike Colter. Rather than take on religion or politics, this legal drama will set its sights on Silicon Valley. Colter plays a scrappy lawyer who takes on a powerful tech giant in a high-stakes legal battle after a startup screws him out of his stock options — navigating the cutthroat world of venture capital and disruption culture while fighting for the little guy. He’ll star opposite Busy Philipps and Ella Stiller (Ben’s daughter). Cupertino hits CBS this fall.
But Colter is not the only Evil co-star with a great upcoming gig. Aasif Mandvi has two. He’s been cast in the forthcoming season of The Terror: Devil in Silver, based on the Victor LaValle novel. Mandvi will star opposite Dan Stevens in the six-episode limited series about a man confined to a psychiatric hospital who encounters a demonic presence (how very Evil). No release date has been set, but it’s expected this year. Before that, however, Mandvi will have a recurring role in the upcoming Elizabeth Banks/Matthew Macfadyen series The Miniature Wife. Banks and Macfadyen play a married couple forced to reevaluate the power dynamics of their relationship after Banks’ character is miniaturized in a technological accident. It’s out on Peacock soon — there’s even a trailer.
And finally, and this is my favorite casting news of the week: The exquisite Katja Herbers has been cast in the next series from Better Call Saul co-creator (and Breaking Bad producer) Peter Gould. FX/Hulu has ordered Disinherited to series. It will also star Mike Flanagan regular Victoria Pedretti, Kiera Allen, and Alan Ruck. Details are sparse, but the show will center on an unexpected inheritance that thrusts a pair of scrappy sisters into a world of generational wealth and long-buried crimes.
Trust that it will be considerably better than that logline suggests if Peter Gould’s name is on it. And maybe — finally — Katja Herbers will get the recognition she deserved all along from Evil.
