I’ve lived in New York City for 16 years. 14 and a half of those years have been spent working. Yes, I’ve taken the occasional break from work to eat, sleep, or spend too much time at a karaoke bar after a set when I should have been finding another show to do. Still, my time in New York hasn’t contained much exploring New York. Deep down, I didn’t want to look like a tourist. One thing I have seen several times, against my will, is the tree at Rockefeller Center.

My relationship with Christmas is complicated. I was raised Catholic, so I have plenty of Christmas memories. As soon as I entered the aforementioned working world, I spent a lot of Christmases selling drinks or tours of Ground Zero to people whose families could spend the holidays doing things instead of working. Seriously, a woman once called my office at the time, hoping we did tours of Ground Zero on Christmas Day. She was adamant about it and relieved when she found out we did. When family or friends have visited over the years, I’ve taken them to the tree against my better judgment. It’s always crowded and barely worth the trek.

When my kids were born, my attitude toward Christmas (and most holidays) changed. I wanted them to be able to experience them with fresh eyes. They don’t need to be bogged down by my negativity. They can build that up themselves over years of existence. They will help us decorate the tree this afternoon. I put on a Santa hat while we picked it out yesterday. We may visit the big tree as a family! Regardless of what we do, all of it will be easy as Christmas is widely accepted and pushed in this country, despite what a bunch of white people with microphones would have you believe.

Two good white people with mics (Desi Lydic and Jordan Klepper) ventured to the FOX News HQ to crash their annual tree-lighting. While there, the Daily Show duo asked people if they thought there was a war on Christmas, something Fox News has been claiming for years. The answers were about fifty-fifty. That’s fifty percent “people who looked around at all the Christmas decorations and assumed they were under attack” and fifty percent “people with common sense.”

As someone who hasn’t explored the city much in his 16 years here, I didn’t even realize Fox had a tree. It’s pointless! There’s a bigger, nicer one right around the block! I know because I’ve been forced to fight through crowds for a glance. I can’t tell you how tall the Empire State Building is. There’s no difference between Staten and Governor’s Island. Don’t ask me s*** about Brooklyn. Still, I know that Christmas is thriving, and to pretend otherwise is f***ing dumb.
