What's Streaming This Month? TV. But, Like, On Your Phone!

By Tori Preston | TV | April 1, 2020 |

Coming to Quibi.png

So, full disclosure: I didn’t set out to assemble this Jumbo-Sized Super Edition of the Pajiba Streaming Guide. It’s not like I decided to dig in and do my job better, knowing that people may be looking for MOAR CONTENT to watch from the isolated safety of their bunkers bunks. I didn’t set out to see if Acorn had anything going on this month, or BritBox, and I certainly didn’t tell Quibi to launch. It just happened this way, like some sort of cosmic Too Much TV gift! So let’s unwrap this sucker and see what’s coming, shall we?

QUIBI
You knew it was coming, even if you didn’t know precisely what “it” was. Quibi is finally launching this month with a staggering 35 new shows, starring everyone from Idris Elba to Chance The Rapper to Anna Kendrick to Megan Rapinoe. However, none of that explains WTF a “Quibi” is, so let me see if I can help: It’s, like, bite-sized TV designed solely for your phone. The service rolls out on April 6, and costs $4.99 with ads/ $7.99 without ads — but you get a 90-day free trial if you sign up by April 20th, which ain’t too shabby. Now, I don’t have time to walk you through ALL 35 scripted and unscripted programs that will be released throughout the month, so let me just highlight a few: There’s Survive (April 6), about Sophie Turner surviving a plane crash, and Murder House Flip (April 6), and that Punk’d reboot with Chance The Rapper (April 6), and Chrissy’s Court with Chrissy Teigan (April 6), and even a comedy called Flipped starring Will Forte and Kaitlin Olson! There’s A LOT, is my point.

Acorn TV
Oooooh, a new depressing small-town Scottish mystery starring David Tennant! STICK IT IN MY EYEHOLES! Deadwater Fell launches April 6:

BritBox
If you’d like your mysteries in sunnier locales, then BritBox has you covered with The Mallorca Files on April 1:

Shudder
Shudder has a lot of great horror films to tout this month, from the cult classic ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK to a whole FRIDAY THE 13TH showcase, with the first eight films plus documentaries about the franchise. For fans interested in the behind-the-scenes history of horror, they’ve also got a new 5-part docuseries called Cursed Films which explores the making of some of Hollywood’s most notoriously “cursed” film productions, including The Exorcist, The Omen, and Poltergeist (April 2).

Disney Plus
The big Disney news this month isn’t TV related at all — it’s that they’re adding the latest Pixar film, Onward, to the platform on April 3rd! So if you missed that one in theaters last month, you can just… you know, watch it. With your kids. At home. It’s super cute!

Hulu
Future Man is back for a third season on April 3rd, but the big deal is happening over on FX on Hulu this month, where Cate Blanchett is starring in a show. CATE BLANCHETT! I KNOW! The series, Mrs. America (April 15), tells the story of the women’s liberation campaign to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s — and the story of its biggest opponent, Phyllis Schlafly (Blanchett). The series also stars Elizabeth Banks, Uzo Aduba, Melanie Lynskey, James “TEDDY” Marsden, Niecy Nash, John Slattery, Sarah Paulson, and Rose g*ddamn Byrne as Gloria Steinem.

Amazon Prime
Bosch returns for a sixth season on April 17, and the mindbending new sci-fi series Tales From The Loop debuts on April 3. It’s based on the paintings of Simon Stålenhag, and focuses on the adventures of people who live above a machine called the Loop that makes the impossible… possible. I don’t know what any of that means, but there’s robots and floaty bits and I like it already!

Apple TV Plus
Apple continues to steadily present some low-key great material. On April 3rd they’re launching a new series called Home Before Dark, inspired by the real-life reporting of a young investigative journalist named Hilde Lysiak. The show finds Hilde moving to her father’s home town, only to dig up a cold case everyone hoped would stay buried. Then on April 24th the highly anticipated “live documentary experience” Beastie Boys Story finally arrives, directed by Spike Jonze (who also directed the music video for “Sabotage”!).

Netflix
Oh, have we finally gotten to Netflix? THANK JEEBUS. OK, so our lady Flix of Net has a new season of Nailed It! starting April 1, and a Chris Hemsworth movie called Extraction on April 24, and some CW-sounding teen mystery called Outer Banks on April 15. It’s all… fine. You know what’s better than fine, though? ALL SIX SEASONS OF COMMUNITY ARE AVAILABLE APRIL 1 — just to remind us all how darkest timelines work…
