News cycles are weird. Stories that don’t seem important can be covered extensively. Other times, something that seems very important will fly under the radar. That was the case with the devastating accident that took place in East Palestine, Ohio, three weeks ago. At the time, residents and people online were begging for coverage. Now, we’ve reached the point where the story is so prevalent it is being made fun of on late-night television.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t be making light of the situation; quite the opposite. Levity can help make a devastating situation more tolerable. I find it interesting to see the cycle play out like this. Given the nature of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he and his crew can’t bring it up if no one is talking about it. That wouldn’t do them any good. So this awful thing sits out there until it’s deemed important enough to make light of. It’s weird!

The sketch itself is hilarious and doesn’t target the people of East Palestine. It highlights the bullshit that they’re currently dealing with. Residents have been told they can safely consume the local drinking water, and they are a bit suspicious of that. Colbert’s Crew enlisted Brian Stack to play a nervous ventriloquist. It is some prime, Grade-A Stack.

This is a funny sketch about an unfortunate thing. That can’t happen right away. Sometimes it never happens. Because, again, news cycles are f***ing weird.
