There are plenty of Democrats who still want Joe Biden as their presidential nominee this year. They are standing behind the incumbent President, certain he can defeat Trump. There are plenty of Democrats who want Biden to drop out. They see his age as an obstacle to a second term as President. Both sides have polls to back up their arguments. Each group is fueled by a desire to preserve Democracy, so they dig their heels firmly into the ground.

Watching people turn against Biden has been pretty stunning. It’s not the reason why they are turning against him. I understand, even if I do go back and forth myself. The stunning aspect is seeing people who have shown almost unwavering support of Biden in the past do a 180. People are allowed to change their minds about their President. This isn’t a dictatorship. It doesn’t make the switch any less surprising; especially when it’s coming from someone like Stephen Colbert.

Colbert has been a staunch Biden supporter. He has used his platform to support the President and take shots at former President Trump. That said, Colbert has never shied away from joking about Biden in the past. It may not happen as frequently, but it happens. The host was on a break when the debate between Biden and Trump happened, so he hasn’t been able to comment until now. He began by airing clips of people praising Biden’s Presidency, something Colbert agreed with.

After praising Biden, Colbert moved on to criticize the President. He joked, “So, should he stay? Should he go? Who am I to recommend? I don’t know what’s going on in Joe Biden’s mind. Something I apparently have in common with Joe Biden.” The crowd sounds like they agree and disagree with the host as they respond to his jokes. It feels representative of the current battle between voters.

The former Daily Show correspondent took a moment to explain why people are upset with Biden’s debate performance. “Going into it, all Joe had to do was allay people’s fears that he was too old, but instead, Biden’s shakiness allowed Trump to get away with 90 minutes of lies, racism, and weird golf brags, which is why a lot of people are saying this was the worst debate performance of all time,” Colbert explained to his audience. “But I don’t think that’s fair. I think that Biden debated as well as Abraham Lincoln, if you dug him up right now.”

I don’t know if Joe Biden will drop out of the race. I don’t know if any of his prospective replacements could defeat the dictator in waiting. What I do know is that we have months of these discussions to go. I’m already tired.
