'SNL' Made a Huge Mistake Firing Chloe Troast

Chloe Troast was a one-season-and-done featured player on SNL two years ago, and her exit was a massive surprise to me. She didn’t have a major presence that season (most first-year cast members don’t), but her few appearances were memorable. I thought she had real potential on the show. Of course, she may have just been fired, according to a wild Internet rumor, because a friend of hers stole food off Lorne Michaels’ plate at the aftershow party.

It sounds far-fetched, but Troast was clearly talented, and her firing otherwise felt inexplicable.

That talent is on full display in her new YouTube series, “Spilling Your Seed,” a parody of ancestry shows like Finding Your Roots, where the host explores a celebrity’s lineage. Troast’s first guest is current SNL featured player (and Please Don’t Destroy member) Ben Marshall. It’s seven minutes long, and I’m not kidding when I say it’s better than anything I’ve seen on SNL this season—outside of Role Model’s first musical number (I really like that “Sally” song) and, uh, this week’s “Pinwheel.”

It’s legitimately funny, though Marshall deserves credit for playing it as straight as he does.

Huge mistake, Lorne. She could’ve been the next Aidy Bryant.
