It’s finally October! The scariest month of the year has arrived. This is why it’s appropriate that we be visited by someone dressed up as a ghastly ghoul. John Lithgow returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to dust off his excellent Rudy Giuliani impression. For my money, it’s the best one out there next to Kate McKinnon. Sorry, Seth Meyers. Time to go back to Impression Camp!

As you may be aware, Rudy Giuliani is rumored to have been banned from FOX News, an honor any normal human being would want bestowed upon them. However, Giuliani is no normal human being (that sound you just heard was me winning the Understatement of the Year award). It seems that the former Mayor finds daily opportunities to put both feet in his mouth. He becomes more unhinged as the years pass by, which makes John Lithgow’s impression all the more perfect.

A great impression can be funny and exaggerated as long as you have something familiar to hold onto. While Lithgow does get wild, guzzling wine and staring into the camera like he’s never seen one before, he also grounds it by expertly mimicking Rudy’s facial ticks. The scrunch of the nose, the drooping mouth, the protrusion of his jowls. It’s all there to remind you that this is a real person.

I’m always happy to see John Lithgow. I’m always happy to see someone dunk on Rudy Giuliani.
