And just like that… Che Diaz, television’s most controversial non-binary Mexican-Irish stand-up comic diva is dunzo. Yesterday, Variety reported that Sarah Ramírez will not be returning for the third season of And Just Like That on Max.

The news isn’t exactly a shock. Last month, Sarah took to Instagram to post about the industry blacklisting artists who show support for Palestinians. Some took this as a suggestion that Sarah wasn’t being asked back to AJLT because of their pro-Palestinian activism. Later, Sarah edited their post caption to clarify that their message had “nothing to do with my past work contracts.” They also accused the tabloids of trying to distract people from what was happening in Gaza.

Variety’s sources deny that Sarah was fired “for their politics or their Instagram presence”. They claim Che had simply reached a “natural conclusion”, since their relationship with Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) had ended.

They’ve got a point; what was left for Che to do? After their romance with Miranda crashed and burned, we got random Che storylines like “Che returns to their old dog grooming job” and “Che Airbnbs their apartment to Carrie and Aidan to make ends meet after their Tony Danza pilot bombed”. At the end of the season, Che returns to stand-up and does some not-very-nice jokes about their relationship with Miranda. Unfortunately, Miranda is in the audience and gets upset. In the finale, the exes make up. The end.

Listen, Che totally sucked. They’re an infuriating, cocky, unfunny fuckboy. And many fans blamed them for ruining Miranda and Steve’s marriage. But it’s a shame that Sarah Ramírez got so much hate, when, clearly, the And Just Like That writers were to blame.

And yet, I’d be lying if I said I won’t miss Che a little. For the last two years, And Just Like That has become my favorite hate-watch. And Che was a big part of that. To think that we’ll never get another stand-up set with hack jokes about how nobody walks in LA: “Yesterday I took an Uber from my bathroom to my bedroom!” Sigh. Sleep easy, Che Diaz.
